Nursery Web Spider

Male Nursery web spiders are known for a unique courtship ritual where they present the female with a silk-wrapped insect "nuptial gift" to prevent themselves from being eaten. Unlike spiders that spin webs to capture prey, this species is an active hunter that uses a "quick sprint" method to catch flies and other insects. They are commonly found May to July in grassland, heathland and gardens, often resting in tall grass.

Wasp Spider

Known for its distinctive yellow, black, and white striped abdomen, which mimics a wasp to deter predators. It is a type of orb-weaver spider that spins large webs in grasslands, often creating a thick, zigzag silk structure called a stabilimentum in the centre. They are commonly found from April to October and primarily feed on grasshoppers, which they quickly wrap in silk after catching them.
